Models for integrated lot sizing problems

    • Raf Jans, prés., HEC Montréal

The lot sizing problem is a fundamental production planning problem in which we have to decide on the timing and quantity of the production over a discrete planning horizon. The main trade-off consists of balancing the setup costs and the inventory holding costs, while satisfying the demand over time. This problem is often a core problem in many larger supply chain problems. The talk will start with a general tutorial on lot sizing problems, explaining some basic Mixed Integer Programming formulations and solution approaches. In the remainder of the talk, we will discuss various applications where the production planning must be integrated with other decisions, such as routing, blending, cutting stock, storage assignment or process configuration. The focus will be on the models and the insights that can be obtained from such integrated models.
