Applied Research in Humanitarian Supply Chain Analytics

    • Marie-Eve Rancourt, presenter, HEC Montréal

This tutorial explores the process of modeling and solving decision-making problems in humanitarian supply chains, with a focus on their unique challenges. Applied quantitative research relies heavily on data collection and processing to define problems and parametrize mathematical models. We will discuss how both unstructured information, such as discussions with field partners, and structured data, such as geographic information systems (GIS), can be used to formulate well-defined problems. A detailed case study on network design for food aid distribution in Kenya will illustrate a real-world application, including solution validation techniques. The goal is to show how quantitative analysis can support supply chain optimization in complex environments, where stakeholders often have diverse and sometimes conflicting objectives and constraints.
